7 Golden Rules of Artwork Care

A good painting can live with your home for decades — if you follow a few simple rules.

1. Keep it out of direct sunlight

UV fades pigments over time; indirect daylight is ideal.

2. Dust dry only

Use a dry microfiber cloth or a soft wide brush. Never spray cleaners on canvas.

3. Mind the humidity

Canvas and wood prefer 40-55% humidity; keep art away from steam and damp walls.

4. Distance from heat

Keep at least one meter from radiators and fireplaces to prevent cracking and warping.

5. Handle by the frame

Carry with both hands on the frame sides; transport vertically, wrapped in a blanket.

6. Check quarterly

Level, hook and backing — small issues grow if ignored.

7. Extra care for gold leaf and texture

Never run fingers over textured surfaces; use only a soft brush.
